For engines, I find steam is the answer for a perfect job. I have tried the solvent route and was not happy. The only place around here with true steam is Cummins. They first apply lots of solvent and let it soak a while then use the steam and finally end up with hot water. The job is amazing.

The inside of axle housing is done with diesel on rags pushed thru the tubes, much like cleaning a rifle barrel. I run the wet rags until they come out clean. Then hand wash the center section with diesel and wipe till clean. I am very happy with the results.

For medium size parts, I have a air powered parts washer with Diesel as the cleaning agent. I can set parts in with air bubble agitation or powered spray.
