Nah, I use paint thinner for 'wet sanding'.

Paint 'cures'. That means it goes through ir-reversible chemical changes. Laquer 'dries'. That means the solvent leaves, but it can be re-disolved by the same solvent. NOT by paint thinner.

Just this week I wet sanded my poly-urethaned bed boards, using paint thinner. Within 24 hours of applying the previous coat.

Plus, I assume that anybody painting at home uses a hardener in the paint. It makes it kick off in a few hours. So less dirt sticks in the finish. Two weeks makes it solid plastic.
