The Mar-K site has some info. I did a simple rabbet on the table saw for the edge. Their plan shows a saw kerf deeper then the rest of the rabbet. I figured that kerf would just be a place to trap water. So I did without it. The strips are flat on the bottom.

I'm almost done repairing the bad side. I went ahead and replaced the top 'curl' with a piece of pipe. Between the rust and the sandblasting, it was paper thin. I had to remove and rework the rear post pocket due to collision damage. And weld in 6 patches where trapped water led to rust holes in the side. Installing the angles strips on it next, followed by a skim coat of bondo.

You are right, beds are a PITA. Probably un-apreciated by folks who haven't done one. They just look at the cab and say 'nice job', never realizing how much work goes into the bed. Or how bad they can be 'before', after 50 years of hard use.
