Back in 2001 when I rebuilt my PW, the fuel tank was really bad with heavy rust inside.

I totally purged the tank so it was safe and then cut the end out. I blasted the inside with black beauty till it was clean and bright. I then welded the end back in place.

I did a lot of research on what product to use to coat the inside of the tank. I settled on Hirsch Fuel Tank Sealer. Back in 2001 it was stated on their web site that it was FAA Approved. I followed the directions and it appeared to come out real well.

About a year later, while driving, the engine shut down. The problem was a large sheet of the sealer came loose and plugged the fuel pickup in the tank. Its impossible to remove all the sealer once its applied. I no longer 'trust' that tank, and will have the Fuel Tank Renu process done this winter during the Cummins Swap.

Based on my experience, I feel its best to go the Gas Tank RENU process. Though expensive its guarnateed.

By the way the Hirsch Fuel Tank web site no longer mentions that the product is FAA Approved ???
