Per Chrysler's new CEO Jim Press, every vehicle is subject to review.
The Dakota has been completely redesigned for 2008, if sales take off, it will stay.
The Commander is built upon the Grand Cherokee platform, as a results, it costs very little to produce and currently outsells the Durango, nearly 2 to 1.
The Durango has had a face lift this year and shares platform with the Chrysler Aspen.
The North Jefferson Plant is rumored to be closed.
What does this all mean? Not much yet, but the scuttlebutt is that the Durango/Aspen platform may remain, but that the Grand Cherokee/Commander nameplate will be on it.
Time will tell as what is happening right now is Chrysler's version of Nascar's Silly Season.
All poor performing vehicles will be scrutinized and evaluated. Those with potential will be redesigned, those with too much overlap and poor sales will be gone.
The most likely candidates are the PT Cruiser, Viper and the Compass. The PT and the Viper share no platforms and sales have plunged in the past two years. The Jeep Compass shares platform with the Patriot and Caliber but it's butt ugly and sales have not been as hoped.
Only time will tell.
