M37 light questions

Can somebody explain how the blackout lights worked on an M37? The 3-lever switch must have done something, but the old-style (round) military tail lights don't have the blackout marker light function like the newer composite lights have (the 4 bars that look like one if you're too far back, 2 if you're at the right distance, and 4 if you're too close), and I don't know where the blackout driving light would go on an M37.

With the old-style tail lights, the wiring diagram shows 2 wires to the right-hand light and 3 to the left one, which makes me think that both have a black-out marker function and a brake function, but only the left one has a non-black-out marker function. More crucially, there's no provision for turn signals with this arrangement. To have legal turn signals, do I have to put on modern composite tail light assemblies?

If I read the wiring diagram right (fig 2-6 in the TM), I'm supposed to have left and right black-out marker/tail lights in the rear, but only a right black-out stop (brake) lamp and only a left service stop (brake) lamp in the rear. This seems very weird, but that's the way the wiring looks to me. The wiring diagram also confirms that there's only a left service tail lamp. I have an XM105 trailer that's like that, so I assume that was all that was required back then. I learned about it when I got pulled over for a burned out right tail lamp, but as I looked it over with the officer and checked the wires, I concluded it never had a right hand rear tail light.

Now I have a dilemma of not only figuring out what's authentic, but somehow making it legal and safe as well, which means having two service brake lights in the rear, and turn signals front and rear. I'd also like to have the blackout lights work, including adding a blackout head lamp if I can figure out where it goes. Any help would be appreciated.
