Good point. I have coated the bed sides with a couple coats of primer and will paint them before bolting on the strips. I could also coat the aluminum or steel side strips with POR and it should be ok.
As for size of the angle strips, I would think anything from 1" to 1-1/2" should work. I'll have to see what is readily available.
