While they are tightest over center, it shouldn't have any actual resistance.

A loose box will accentuate existing wobble- you probably have a problem elsewhere. Did you check the front end for play while it was up? Mine had a loose wheel bearing and a square tire- a 40 year old recap.

Look for play in the tie rod ends, the drag link (adjustable), and play in the pivot points of the axle knuckles.
