Okay, that makes sense. I was thinking those curved pieces riveted onto the end of the arm were shaped like they were supposed to do more than just hold the rubber bumper on. It sounds like I'd have a hard time making my own "lips" since they need to be spring steel bent in a complicated way. I don't really care if the arms don't hold the door open. I just want them to stop it from swinging wide open and banging into the mirror or the jerry can bracket like they do now. I'm still not sure why they're binding up without the "lips" there unless the alignment it critical to keep it from hitting something else. I think I'll try holding them in the middle of the rectangular hole by hand and see if I can close the door that way. If not, there must be some other problem.
