I just got through rebuilding the transfer box for my 53. I replaced all the bearings, seals, and gaskets. I found most of the bearings & races had water damage. This box hadn't been used in quite a while. One word of advice-- if you are doing a transfer box rebuild, get an extra gasket set from VPW, It has different thickness gaskets to set the bearing preloads with. Their bearing and seal kit was really nice, it just needs the extra gaskets. It doesn't hurt to order extra shims either.I used several of the different thicknesses to set the bearing preloads per the manual. I am getting ready to do the trans now.
