When I was a kid I liked to prowl around in the old coastal defense batteries that are at various places near the entrances to Puget Sound and the Columbia river. Some have been made into parks, but back then at least some were completely overgrown by the forest, with big trees growing out of them like Aztec ruins. Two I particularly liked were North Head (north side of the Columbia River) and Tillamook Head (just south of Seaside, Oregon). The guns were gone, but the doors were all either left open, or rusted off and you could wander around inside a maze of painted underground rooms and see the elevators where they brought the shells up from the ammo bunkers. Sometimes, following a deer trail or the overgrown remains of a road through the woods you'd find a shaft going straight down to who-knows-where, or a pillbox on the side of a cliff. There's something sort of "planet of the apes" like about seeing so much modern concrete so completely overgrown by coastal rain forest.
