what's the purpose of the sheetmetal on both sides of enginr

There are two light gauge sheet metal plates on the bottom of the engine bay on both sides of the oil pan. Do these serve any pupose or would it maybe be alright to take them off? They kind of get in the way sometimes. Thanks for out put and advice. very greatly appreciated.
