I think it basically boils down to who did the job. I've seen the same things you've described. I've also seen work done by amatures that makes the pro's work look sloppy.
Do you think if we go look at Clint Dixon's job that there's any sub-standard workmanship? I doubt it.
My brother...I wouldn't let him fill my car with gas...he'd screw it up. Some people aren't mechanically minded.
I'm confidant that I could bring you my 318 Poly & have you work on it Norm...even though that's not your trade.
I'd rather have Clint install a 3 point lift on my truck than the local equipment dealer.
A licence isn't what I look for when I'm looking for someone to work for me....I look at past jobs.
Some of the best mechanics I know have never done any schooling or apprenticship.
Many things cannot be taught. You're either born with a mechanical mind, or your not.
If you are....homes really aren't very complicated compared with the space shuttle. :)
