I got a chance to go inside a restored B-24 and B-17 in Seattle while on vacation a few years ago. WOW! Well worth the ticket of about $18 if I recall.
Those crewmen really had cajones. The aluminum skin looked to be not much thicker than a beer can, and that was all the armor they had in the fuselage.
