He said the compressor was to be located right under the breaker panel. Did you miss that part too?

As far as the wire being undersized for a long run, I mentioned that as well. However, all that will happen if the wire is under-sized is the motor won't develop full HP. The wire gages in the NEC are such that the wire won't overheat and the voltage drop generally be minimal at normal residential distances. If it's a long run, yes it would be wise to calculate the drop (under starting, not running, conditions). But even if he runs 12 gage wire 200' to the compressor, it's not going to cause any electrocution, crater, or fire. It's just going to cause the motor lack power or possibly not even start, and in the absolute worst case if the motor stalls for a long time, it'll overheat, the windings will short out, and the breaker will trip, but that's really a worst, worst, worst case scenario.

As far as getting someone who "knows what they're doing" to size the wire for me, I'm a licensed professional engineer (branch speciality: electrical) in two states, so who would you suggest that might be more "qualified" to calculate how big a wire a guy needs to run 5 feet from a circuit breaker to an ordinary retail model shop air compressor?
