That has to be the biggest problem with technology, 8tracks were never designed to last more then a few years, as the tape ages, it becomes very brittle. Then when you decide to play them, they snap under their operating tension...
Its too bad, i've got a pile of old 8tracks i found in the basement of an old house i used to live in, but i'm afraid to try and play them...
