I broke the winch cable on my cat once, but it was a rusty old cable I'd scrounged some place and the cat has a pretty stout "headache rack" behind the seat just for that sort of thing. Those old Carco winches don't have shear pins and they run on all spur gears (no worm), straight off the PTO so being geared down as low as they are, I suspect they could break just about any cable you could wind on the drum, if they didn't drag the cat backwards first.
