1) Selectable hubs are an upgrade because they allow you to "idle" the axle shafts, differential, and front driveshaft. Without them everything spins all the time increasing wear and decreasing fuel mileage (like it really matters). I actually think that lockouts are a little over-rated, and are not entirely necessary. But, it is not a bad upgrade if your truck spends most of its life on the highway.

2) FFPWs were never available with a locker from the factory. In the 40's Detroit Locker made a "no spin" unit for the 9 5/8" differential, and produced it until a factory fire wiped out the patterns and blue-prints (these units are very rare). Later the Lock-Rights were designed and developed for this application, and for years were the only option available. And, finally, you can now buy a selectable locker (from me)- an ARB.
