In day gone by manufacturers had a fortune tied up in inventory (parts). Planners had to be on their toes and have an accurate idea (SWAG) of how many units they were going to sell and buy accordingly . Many castings trans , engines and others along with the wheels had dates on them . This is only a guess as to the date as many of these parts were pulled from shelves and installed (ie, 57 trans in a58 ).In the early 80's someone invented ,Just in time, known as JIT. Now you will almost always get a 99 with only 99 parts unless its an early model which would be 98 .
