Replace bearings that may exhibit deep pitting. That'll make it quieter... You may find similar pitting on shaft areas. Just polish them with crocus cloth. You can polish the pitted gear tooth areas to take the edges off the pits if you want to. The problem with that is that you will likely alter the tooth profile which is worse than the existing pitting.

The gears were made of 8620 steel and carburized about .030 deep. You will find that the pitting may be only as deep as the case hardening. If things get noisy a few years down the road, you'll know what to do.
