RE: 1100X16's. I am in the Barstow area and I
sold several hundereds of these tires a few
years back so I know a bit about them. First, nowadays,
most are either going to Mexico on a term sale or are
getting shredded. It seems president cum-stain &
his ilk think that us simple citizens shouldn't
have the right to own anything ex-mil-spec if he
can give it free to a socialist country.
Item next, some are still available from several area
sources but I haven't looked at them so I can't
vouchsafe for the quality.
Item 3: new manufacture wheels can be had from Century
Wheel and Rim in Corona, Ca. (909) area code.
they made the ones I used to sell.
Item 4: 16.5 tires are now essentially obsolete
so I would think long and hard before buying 16.5
wheels for a PW/M series Dodge & 15" wheels just
won't fit over the drums unless you want to look
like a homeboy lowrider jump-up-and-down truck.
Item 5: You would want to run tubes in the
1100X16's as the military took them off for a
reason, mostly leakage. I sold and used the low
bed tubes which fit 900/1000/1100X15R/16R tires.
Good heavy tubes, reasonably priced. At the
speeds and loads we run, bias tubes will work
also no matter what the tire dealer might say.
Item 6: I have run all my 1100X16's sans weights
and at speeds to 70 MPH and have yet to have
a balance problem unless the tire was clearly
worn/abused buy Uncle Sam's Misguided Children
(USMC) prior to going to DRMO sale.
Item Last: there are some Q78X16's out there
which are as tall but not as "floaty" as the
Michelins. They're a bit pricey though. There
are also some 285/80X16's out there but at last
check, they too are pricey and less floaty.
Hope this helps....
