The military connection might be correct.
I think the axles on some of the half-tracks were the same.
When I bought my W500 (which has lockouts) I was told that
they are available from Warn for something like $900.00 a pair.
I don't know if this is correct since I fortunately don't need the
items.
I was also given a lead on seals, bearings and other parts for this
axle. It is:

I haven't checked it out but he might have some info for you.
