Yeah, your are right, I should do it that way. I have inspected the case, and I had no metal shavings in oil, the front wheel drive output shaft was tight, the main shaft front and rear bearings were good. I know there are needle bearings of some type in the center of mainshaft that I can see from side cover opening and that I can get a little movement out of. Don't have parts book, but assume there are other thrust washers etc that could be worn. The case does not jump out of gear or leak, I really think it is a mainshaft problem, and one that is a worn situation rather than a bearing out. Trans case has unknown miles but they are many. I dont have much expereince with the np205, but I know some of the other gear drive cases (rockwells) were noisy. I was hoping to do a repair as quickly as possible. Perhaps it was a hair brained idea. It certainly wouldn't be my first. Does every body elses case run perfectly quiet?
