The Master Cylinder is designed to work with the brake system, ie; Disk or Drum or a mix. The Bore and Stroke is designed to push the required volume of brake fluid to either wheel cylinders or calipers. You can not just grab a Master Cylinder from the same 'weight' truck and expect them to work properly.

With that said, if you 'know' the bore and stroke of the original master cylinder, redisual pressure check valves etc, then with that info you can replace with another Master Cylinder of that spec. You can also use the original spec as a guide when upgrading for more efficient brakes.

As an example, the Disk Brake conversion, which uses Chev C-30 Components, originally spec'ed a 1 & 1/4" bore Master Cylinder. I have found that by increasing the Master Cylinder bore to 1 & 5/16 (JD-8) option, much more efficient brakes will result. But this upgrade was not just made by a guess. It was based on the spec of the original design and then tested and proven. Since then, may disk conversions now use the JD-8 option Master Cylinder.
