Less cable length is always good argument if you find yourself in a situation that requires you to pull in most of your cable, all near one side of the drum. Sometimes it takes most of the 250' of cable out to reach the nearest tree, and only 10' pulled back in to get unstuck. Sometimes it takes all of the cable pulled back in. The answer to the problem would be a fairlead that wraps the cable neatly across the length of the drum regardless of the angle of pull. I remember in the late '70s there was a story in one of the four wheel drive magazines on one that was developed. The last I heard was the Warn bought the patent, and that was the last I heard.
