I don't believe it is the bearings, the shaft is tight within the case, the slack is "rotational" slack. In other words, the input shaft can be rotated back and forth several degrees by hand, and when doing so, there is a clanking sound. When using 1st or reverse (going from a dead stop to moving, or from moving to a dead stop) i get the clanking sound. It also happens if taking off from a dead stop in second, but not as loud.

My first guess was slack between the gear teeth, but you guys have worked on these a lot more than me.
