Steering Knuckle Bearing Torque

The repair manual spec is 25 to 27.5 foot lbs torque. This seems a bit too tight to me. Gordon Maney says err in the low 20's.

Could this torque spec be one of the reasons the bearing rollers get pounded into the races? What have some of you guys set your bearings at? Has anyone had their truck long enough to wear out a bearing that they personally installed? How long did they last? Does the 50 year rule apply in this case?
