There were dozens of them in Western Washington in the early decades of the 20th century. Some, like Freeland, still remain as the names of towns. Some were communist, and some were even nudist. What they mostly seemed to have in common, however, is that what sounded like a good idea to a bunch of people sitting around discussing politics, got old real quick after a few winters of living in drizzle, rain, fog, and mud constantly. If they managed to hold on long enough to raise a generation of children, the teenagers invariably wanted nothing to do with utopia in the mud and went off to be capitalists or work for the capitalists.
