It has been a while, but I recall that we had this problem because the stoplight switch for a Ford - identical in every other respect - had smaller lugs and had been used as a replacement with metal foil packed in to make it work - NOT! I think most Ford switches had two female or two male (can't remember which) but there was one that had the male/female combination. Since we use the pictures in a book to pick the old switches, this can mess us up.
