My '71 M601 had a hex nut on that end of the (remains of) cable, so when I got the new one made they used a new hex nut same thread on that end. I slid a tube spanner (like a lawnmower plug spanner) over the cable, tightened it up, then took the spanner off and hooked up the other end - easy.
