I've used electrolysis to clean quite a few parts on my Power Wagon.

My experience is with pretty low current. I use a 3 amp battery charger set at 12 volts running about 1-2 amps. It takes quite awhile, 24-36 hrs but works very well. I don't know if higher current would speed up the process.

The resulting piece is covered with a black substance that needs to be washed and wirebrushed off before painting.

A couple of lessons learned:
The part needs to be cleaned and degreased before electrolysis.
The part needs to be protected fairly quickly after electrolysis and cleaning otherwise flash rusting will occur!
