Any of those trucks with 100,000 that has not had new ball joints will need ball joints. Lot of them fail at 60,000 to 70,000 miles.
....and that is 2nd or 3rd generation trucks. I am advised by parts vendors that the 3rd gen trucks are worse in that regard.
The ball joints are not up to the weight of the engine. Plus, there is a good chance you will destroy the wheel bearings getting them out of the steering knuckles.
