Had a very damaging 7.3 magnitude quake in 1886.
WHen you visit, you can see what they did to try and maintain or hold together the buildings in the aftermath.
They "through bolted" with very long and large diameter iron rods across the widths of the houses, and you can still see the large "washers" and nuts on the outside. Washers I believe of 12-18 inch diameters, etc.
