I'm glad you tracked down the problem. If I could go back and be an engineer at Dodge in the 1950s, I'd write an ECN (engineering change notice) to add a hard-wired connection as described. If there's a generic fault with old Dodge trucks, it seems to be electrical connections. They were great with the mechanical stuff, but it seems to have taken them a while to get the electrics right.

Electrical problems are always a matter of separating the system in pieces until you find the piece that's causing the problem. "Shotgunning it" (replacing parts randomly) gets expensive fast and still often ends up missing the real problem.
