My wife and I along with her sister stopped at a RR crossing years ago. There was one car in front of us. I noticed a lot of noise as the train passed in front of us. Then I realized that one car was derailed and its wheel was bouncing from tie to tie. As that car hit the road it tipped over towards us taking several cars with it. You should have seen the people in the car in front of us bail out. We did also my wife and I got out but she shut the door on her sister (2 door car). The car in front of us was covered with corn and we had some up against the front of our car.
The passenger in the car in front of us worked for the RR and really pissed at his girlfriend for pulling up so close to the tracks. Several RR cars ended up in the ditch on both sides of the road and corn was all over the place. Interestingly the other lane had just a little corn on it with a few scrapes in the road. We pulled around the car in front of us and took sister to the airport and made her flight. If that one lane had not been open it was a 100 mile detour to get to the airport.
By the way I stay well back of any RR crossing when a train is passing. I was very lucky the first time and I am not going to push it.
