Roger,
A real nice FULL-DAY driving loop from Denver that would put you in our area is I-25 South to Colorado Springs past "Doug in CO's" home, Hwy 24 W to Woodland Park close to us, Hwy 67 N to Deckers where you cross a gold-medal fly fishing section of the South Platte river, Jefferson County 126 N to Pine Junction, Hwy 285 E to Denver real close past "Dan in CO"'s and "Fletch's" homes. An interesting feature of this road trip is that between Woodland Park and Pine Junction, you drive through three recovering wildland fire areas: Hayman Fire 2002, Gas House Fire (or Buffalo Creek Fire) 1996, and High Meadows Fire 2000(?) (I think 2000!!! (is that right Dan???)).

All that being said and still proud of my own area, This beautiful drive limits you to the Front Range foothills. Taking the same amount of time driving west from Denver will place you in the midst of the much more spectacular ranges of the central mountains for a more true taste of what you expect from Colorado. Another good day-loop would be west from Denver on Hwy 285 to Grant, N from Grant (I can't recall the road number) up and over unpaved Guanella Pass to Georgetown, and E to Denver on I-70.
An even bigger loop, but still do-able in a day is W from Denver on 285 to Fairplay, N over paved Hoosier Pass through Breckenridge to Frisco/Silverthorne/Dillon, bypass the Eisenhower Tunnel portion of I-70 by going over paved Loveland Pass on Route 6, then intersecting I-70 E back to Denver.

Take a look at the map and put those areas in perspective of what you can do in a day and you will come up with many other options. Your preference of whether you like to keep clicking milage or if you like to stop for more detailed sightseeing plays into where you choose to go on a 1-days drive.

Depending on your northern destination, Rocky Mountain Natl. Park and Estes Park scenery is hard to beat.

Enjoy the trip,
Bruce
