Sounds normal for "cut out relay' on Gen systems

Generators require more power for the field than alternators. So much in fact that they would be a net loss at low rpms. So they put a 'cut out relay' into the regulator. It shuts off the field at low speeds where the generastor would be a net loss. It prevents discharging the battery as fast at low idle. Thats why Ammeters were installed. It's up to the driver to pay attention to the meter, and if idling too long, pull the hand throttle out to correct to a charging attitude. Do you think meters and controls were installed for industrial tech appearances? Not in the days before alternators...
