I think most guys who get that 'plug' out lose the shoe into the differential, where it can cause major grief.

Igor is correct, it is there to prevent the side thrust from flexing the parts so much that the bull gear can jump the heifer shaft. It is used on a lot of big truck sized differentials.

Re-assembly should be self explanatory, I think you have it figured out. As I recall, the clearance is about .010, set it with a feeler guage. (double check that somewhere) Tack weld it in place, again, so the next newbie won't do the same mistake...
