There is a reverse idler in there. Not hearing the sound, it is hard to know, but you may have chipped teeth on that gear, or a problem with its needle bearings. Disassembly and inspection is your only real answer, bad as that must sound. My guess is that it is more likely a tooth damage issue. Dave Cirillo may come along and make a more experienced comment.
