I too don't want to dwell on the points where we disagree and to a greater extent I was using my experiences with trying to produce Sweptline parts as a guide. Yes there are more options now, but there are also lost opportunities. Roberts and Restoration Specialties stay in business because they have expanded their product line. Others, such as Offenhauser and Wieand have stopped production of intakes. So the results are mixed.
I have no issues with parting out a destroyed, by rust or accident, truck to provide the remaining "good" parts for another truck. I do have a problem with cannibalizing a perfectly good truck just to salvage a few parts. That's a potential truck that is gone forever. The individual owners can do what they want, but scavenging parts for scavenging sake just seems the wrong thing to do with a truck that I think has a soul. Just my gut feelings, nothing more.
I'm probably aware of more than you think....= ) and I appreciate what you have done for our hobby.
I still think that if you have seen 500 trucks and I've seen 500 trucks that doesn't mean that there are 1,000. In fact I'm afraid that my numbers of 3200 may be high, but it's ALL speculation, we won't know unless we get more trucks into the registry!
The 1,000 active buyers I was talking about was based upon BOTH Sweptline registered owners and Power Wagon registered owners, partly tongue in cheek, but I don't see the numbers. VPW* has approx 90 trucks signed up for the Rally, CA gets about 30-40, add up all of the trucks in ALL of the rallies, add in PWA subscribers who are not on line, deduct the overlap and multiply by 3, I'll stand by that number of both active and inactive hobbyist and Dodge owners that still have runners.
Until we implant the chips with the info Paul fears to give, this is all speculation, but interesting. I'd like to see more opinions and the basis of their estimates, extrapolated with good math hypothesis. Until then I'll stand by the 3200 number, which is 2800 more than either one of us can prove.....= )
* I'm sure, or at least I hope, that Dave has a data base compiled over the years with pretty good numbers showing how many customers:ie trucks, that he knows about. (I wonder if he sends out a mailer of his past customers and participants, when it is Rally time?)
