our 1940s and 1950s cars exist in salty parts poor cuba. simple technology and built to last design are a testiment to old school american thinking and KISS engines. i believe that a well tuned 1950s car updated for safety and economy - disc brakes, etc. and kept on the road in perpetuity would do less environmental damage than switching out rigs every 5 years - even with improvements in mpg. there is no free lunch. when your gas sipping prius batterys go bad and make it into the recycle / dump how much environmental damage will that do? how much is the true cost of chasing the almighty mpg vs keeping an oldie on the road? im planning a stick it to the man rig- something like an old scout or grand wagoneer with a 4bta in it. i will feed it parts and labor forever. not buying a new car will be my silent protest. id like to feed it biodiesel but i will not do dumpster diving to get wvo. that is a little too crunchy for my sensibilites. my m37 with a stock six once passed emissions in NY. the station ran the test to see how rich / lean it was running and was blown away by how relatively clean it ran.
