Yes the lift is altered. I have the cam ground first then install cam andvalves and measure valve to head clearance then shave head accordingly. These engines are old and you don't know how many times the head has already beend shaved. so each case is different. I have never used HD springs and have never had floating valves. I use NOS stock springs. Flatheads don't ever see 6000 rpms where you might float a valve.
