I use to agree with you that the spring shackles need to be vertical. However, I recently learned that is not correct. The swinging spring shackle needs to be slightly swung out in the direction that it would be for compression of the spring. Apparently if it perfectly centered it could actually swing the other direction and screw the springs but good. I do not fully understand that. If you look at stock vehicles you will see the shackle is in the slightly swung position and is not verticle.
