The frontest, fat o-ring seals the check valve, so you don't have residual presure without it. Not currently your problem.

But the cup is what pushs the fluid. Pressure pushs the lip outward, making a seal. It if it is in backwards, no wonder it don't work. Push forward, no flow. Let up, spring pushs cup back,which pumps fluid back to the master.
