Hey Chris,

The valve stems haven't been ground - side by side on my workbench, they are the same height as my intake valves. And when they were installed in the motor, there is no way that they could have matched since the bottom of the exhaust spring retainer was higher than the top of the intake spring retainer.

I didn't find any shims under the springs, either - so my guess is an amateur valve job.

From your description, it sounds like the valves would have seated and opened OK - even sunken as they are - but the exhaust flow and valve closure time and pressure may have been impacted.

I'm going to go ahead and get new seats put in, just to be on the safe side.
