Hi there....

So I'm getting around to finding an oil filter to replace the one in my WC, and of all the info I've accumulated, I'm not sure which one to try to get at my local NAPA store. Some of the guys there are sharp, others ain't. So I'll ask here.

The filter that's in the truck now is a round cannister type, with a little pull handle on top. It is 4.25 inches in diameter and 4 7/8 inches high. The top and bottom are unpainted metal, and the side is painted red and are perforated with lots of small louvers. There are no numbers on the filter anywhere. It's definitely a well made filter, not a discount store cheapie.
Any comments on how old this filter might be as well?

The top of the filter housing says "Military Standard Filter Cover Assembly 25791 Purolator Products Inc.

Another odd question since we're talking about oil in an old truck. Some of you guys who have been doing this longer than I have might know the answer to this one. The oil smells weird. Yep, it doesn't smell like regular fresh oil, nor does it have a sulfuric smell like differential oil. It's not a burnt smell, and not a gas smell. My first thought was that it was old oil, as this truck doesn't seem to have been run or worked on for many, many years. The hoses are hard like plastic, fan belt crumbled when rubbed, tires that came with the truck are dated 1955 and shredded, what vinyl coated wiring has been added to the cloth wiring cracks apart faster than 30-year old car wiring, plug wires snapped and broke upon removal, carb and fuel pump were corroded and full of scale,.......

Working on this truck makes me feel like I've been transported to a bygone era far beyond that of my 30-year old sports cars and motorcycles. And I'm having such fun slowly bringing this old truck back to life!

Thanks guys, for any info!
