My '48 has a one piece hose from the head (thermostat) casting to the radiator. Sounds like yours had the metal tube put in somwhere along in time The hose has a 2" ID, 3/16" wall and it's 6 3/4" long. I got a full set of pre cut hoses from Vintage PW a few years ago. Think the whole lot was only about $25.
Retention flares are little lips on the end of the castings, radiator ports, and heater core tubes.
