Saw where somebody was making 4340 axles for Dana 44's, heat treated. Increased total strength something like 50%. I wondered about the transition temp. (the temp at which the steel becomes brittle, pretty high on heat treated carbon steel...can be in the 60's or higher). I think lower carbon alloys would be better, at least up north.
