4340or many other alloys will make a good axle. 1045 is a bit cheaper. Yeah one could do a lot of whittling from a 4.75" diameter bar 40 odd inches long to make an axle. That would indeed save the outrageous forging up front and production costs. After all the stress from machining, you would definitely need a full solution anneal in a furnace prior to the scan heat treat! That thing would be a wonderful corkscrew without the anneal !
I looked up the price for a 1045 alloy, 5" diam X48" long from metalmart.com. A neat place headquartered a few miles fom me. A bit spendy ...$180.

Now.... Which kind soul reading this post has a strong back, a nice big lathe, a real big chip basket, a case of beer, and a lot of time that can graciously be devoted to PW owners?
