I grew up in Montauk, New York, and for the first year lived across the Old Montauk highway form the ocean. There were/may still be a group of men that made their living fishing by Haul seining, using two powerwagons with capstan winches mounted to the rear pto. They would set out in a dory loop out 1/2 mile of net and come in to shore...then winch the net ashore. They would pick up the fish and loadt them in the dory,(already winched back up on the trailer), and off to the docks. I would watch them at work, never a wasted motion; pulling enormous loades of Blues, Stripers etc., with the most incredible trucks, springs flattened but never hesitating.
That was in 1963-4,...it wasn't until 1992 that I found a friends POWERWAGON ADVERTISER, and found my truck. I am and will remain a newbie!!
But thanks to Gordon Maney, Joe Cimoch and our fellow readers I learn everyday!!! Last summer was the first time I got to drive my PW on those same beaches, my kids at my side...I was crying as I drove.
There is something about these trucks and the people who love them.
POWERWAGONS!
